Maurice (Maury) Roll passed away on May 14th in Williston, North Dakota with his daughter by his side.
He was born in Taylor, ND on May 2, 1937 to Alex and Mary Roll. He grew up in Hebron, ND with seven siblings and attended school until 10th grade. Maury learned to cut meat at an early age while working at a local store. Later, he joined the United States Navy and served four years as a Gunner’s Mate aboard the USS Charles S. Sperry. He was very proud of his service and kept in touch with many of his fellow veterans attending reunions.
In 1963 he married Dorothy Papka and together they had three children. They lived in Great Falls, MT, Idaho Falls, ID and Chinook MT, before finally settling down in Wolf Point in 1973 where he worked as the Meat Manager at Buttrey Foods.
Maury enjoyed many activities such as golf, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed vacations with his family and felt it was important that his kids saw different parts of the United States. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and other games. He was an excellent dancer and taught his daughters and granddaughters how to waltz, polka, two-step and jitterbug. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was very proud of them. They all knew that if they were going to Grampa Maury’s house, they were going to play games.
Maury spent 27 years working for Buttrey’s before he retired. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his horses going on numerous wagon trains and cattle drives. He also was a regular at the rodeo. One of his favorite things to do was to watch TV. There was never a time when the TV was off at his house. He enjoyed old cartoons such as Tom & Jerry, game shows and one of his favorite programs was Walker Texas Ranger.
He is preceded in death by his parents Alex and Mary Roll, sisters, Mary Lou Zentner and Eydie Sailer, his brother Francis Roll and his great grandson, Kruz Porter.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Dennis) Dahl of Belt, MT; Mary Kay (Eric) Hoch of Williston, ND; Sheila (Wayne) Doornek of Livingston, MT; 9 wonderful grandchildren, Jason, Justin, Josh, Lindsay, Alyssa, Savanna, Loni, Dustin, Jordan and numerous great grandchildren, his sisters, Virginia Peterson, Dolly (John) Edwards, Toots (Bill) Parker and his brother Ted (Dianne) Roll.
Maury was a great friend and he will be deeply missed by all. We would like to extend special thanks to everyone who helped our dad, especially these last years while he was sick. A special thank you to everyone at the Cancer Center in Williston, ND.
