Joseph Ryan Hanson was born on January 26, 1996 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Krista Goebel and Joseph W. Hanson. On a bright and beautiful Sunday morning, Joseph walked into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 21, 2015 at the age of 19 as a result of an auto accident.
Joey was much loved and at the age of two he was blessed with another dad when Justin Lucas married Krista. Together they were a family and welcomed three more children into their lives. Joey was the oldest and was the best big brother to Cassandra, Hunter and Morgan.
Joey attended grade school at Stratmoor Hills Elementary and junior high at Fox Meadow both in Colorado Springs, CO. Joey then moved to Montana with his family where he attended high school and graduated with the Class of 2015 at Culbertson High School on May 16, 2015.
During his elementary years Joey played the flute and liked to go to the nursing hone and read to the residents. Joey easily made many friends, young and old. During his high school years, Joey loved to play and watch football and proudly wore #55 on the field for the Culbertson Cowboys. Joey was an avid sports fan and his favorite teams were The Pittsburgh Steelers, The Golden State Warriors and the Colorado Rockies. His favorite players were Marshawn lynch and JJ Watt.
Joey is survived by his parents, Krista and Justin Lucas, Culbertson, MT; Joseph W. Hanson, Pueblo, CO; his siblings Cassandra, Hunter and Morgan Lucas of Culbertson, MT; his grandparents Norman and Debbie Blair, Colorado Springs, CO, Will Lucas, Shiner, TX and Bill and Linda Goebel, Bradenton, FL; Uncle Jay So, Colorado Springs; Aunt Pam and Kevin Elschlager, Liberty, MO; Aunt Danielle and Jake Sharp, University Park, PA; Aunt Melinda and Brandon Cobb, Colorado Springs; Aunt Danielle and Jay Coombs, Helena, MT and Uncle Robert and Teresa Blair, Colorado Springs. Numerous cousins, close family friends Susan and Travis Cotton, Colorado Springs and his dogs Ben and Jade of the family home.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved and favorite Aunt Becky Goebel So; his uncle Jason Lucas; Grandma Ginny Goebel and Great Grandma Virginia Aygarn.
There was a bump in the road, you were moving too fast, now an angel in heaven you can slow down at last. It’s not easy to get over. Trust us, we know, we love you so much, we’ll never let go.
Joey will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him. Joey was the kind of young man that anyone would be proud to call son, brother, grandson and friends.

Our deepest sympathies to all of you at this time. We are deeply saddened with Joey’s passing Sunday. There really are no words that can even be said with how we are feeling right now. We wish that we could be there for you this week, but we will be there in spirit and we will be sending you prayers of love, comfort and also forgiveness so that you can get through this most difficult time.
Just be looking for the balloons that will have a message for our wonderful Joey…I sure hope that they make it to Montana…”Meet me in Montana” is the only song that comes to mind at this time for me…so with that…I LOVE YOU SISTER!!! XOXOXOXO

Krista and family,
We are so so sorry…for me, Joe was the kid who was so thrilled when I got the perfect shot of him playing football, running track, or goofing off in his group of friends. He was the kid who was able to fit in and make friends in a high school class that had been together forever…all of these things add up to a great kid. So glad he was part of Emily’s class….we will remember him forever.

I didn’t know Joey long before his family had moved from Colorado, as a matter of fact my kids and I helped them pack to move to Montana. But in the little time I did get to know Joey I learned that he was a very bright and loving person. One thing I will always remember about Joey though was his SWAGGER…
Krista, Justin, Cassie, Hunter and Morgan, we love you guys and are deeply s sorry for the loss of such a wonderful person. You all are always in our hearts.
. love,

My fondest memory of Joe, was while in NJROTC at Widefield HS. He was on a security assignment making sure nobody passed the caution tape leading onto the airstrip, I was on medical duty as the company medic. Not just 10 minutes after I had given Joe my phone number, I get a message saying he needed me ASAP and that something was very bad. Fearing the worst I ran from one side of the airfield to where he was nearly a mile away. Arriving on scene I found Joe, looking as if he had passed out, I rolled him onto his back and he just begins to laugh hysterically, telling me he only needed to fart really bad and wanted to see what I would do. That same day he began calling me “Medic” a nickname that he never gave up on, and called me that until the last time we spoke. You never did met my daughter, but she will know who you are, I love you brother, I miss you so much.

hey joey, remember back in middle school when everybody got a cookie for lunch but these girls called me fat so i didn’t eat it then you practically shoved it in my mouth saying not to allow anyone to let me down? or when you asked me to keep that secret about your crush but you guys didn’t know the feeling was mutual so all i could do was hint it.. man i miss you and i cant wait to be reunited with you, you are an amazing friend thank you for being in my life.

I only knew Joe a short time through my nephew Thomas but wow, did he make an impact on my life. The finest young man you’d ever want to meet. He gave me a rose when he graduated and I keep that in one of my bibles. My prayers go out to the family.

Joe was like a big brother to me. He was kind and thoughtful and always looked out for me. There was no way anything was going to go wrong in my life without him trying to fix it. I looked up to him. He was my hero and I’ll never forget him. He will forever be in my memories and in my heart. It has been a loss for many. He was one of those people that it was hard not to be friends with. I love and miss you bro. See you soon❤️
