It was just a few short weeks ago that I saw Uncle Clayton. He and Donna pulled into a vacant lot near where I was walking my dog. I hadn’t seen or interacted much with Uncle for sometime. He looked out his car window at me. We exchanged greetings. Still I wondered what was up? “Your Aunt Velma passed away” , he told me. “After I go you’ll be the oldest surviving family member”, he said.
I didn’t think much about it but it was/is true. I’m now the oldest clan member of both my parents families.
Clayton, Leighton, Velma, Alvina, Sam, my mother Thelma, have all passed on. They had all been with or around me, intermittently, throughout my life.
There is an old picture with Clayton kneeling beside me when we were children. Clayton was holding my hand in a loving and tender way. We were dressed in ragged clothes at Blackies pigfarm past the west end. The year was perhaps 1959.
My mother, the oldest of the clan, took me and left the rez. She was eventually found dead while on relocation in LA. I made it back to the rez about 1977. As I grew I had passed through wolf point occasionally in it’s heyday but I didn’t remember it was my original home.
Once back again, Leighton, Clayton and all treated me with loving kindness and care. More than that they protected and educated me on things “Rez”. I got to know and watched grow up most of their children when they were still in diapers. Though they were my cousins, my connections with them were not like my Aunt’s and Uncle’s, particularly Clayton. In time his family’s and children’s needs for his attention took presidence over mine as they should. I had/have my own personal issues as wellโฆ we faded away and apart to other issues and obligations in life.
That love and warmth shown in the old picture between Uncle Clayton and I never died.
Some may recall my family’s musical talent. They/we often performed in bars and funerals over the years. I too was a musician. Some of the most gratifying times of my life were spent making music with my uncle’s.
Clayton’s voice was “world class” full of soul and the moving beauty only music can portray. When he sang, I, and others knew it was an expression of his truth, his heart, his spirit being. I best liked his version of “The Nightlife ain’t no good Life but it’s My Life”. Perhaps it spoke a bit about Uncle’s life.
Now I’ll never hear that voice again…not in this life. RIP
