In the early morning of July 30, 2023, David passed away due to his many health complications at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, Montana. He was 63 years young.
David was born in Los Angelos, California, to Frances “Toni” AllRunner Hawk and John Henry Hawk, Sr. His siblings were John Henry “Hank” Hawk, Jr., Antoinette Lorraine “Doll-Doll” Hawk and Amos Roy Hawk.
David started working when he was 15, odd jobs and such. He worked at a foundry where he worked with his brother, Hank. He worked for Nasa for 3 months. He also worked for a boys and girls club as a counselor. He liked to do whatever popped into his head. He would hitchhike looking for work wherever he was. He passed through many states. He loved to travel, especially being the driver for his mom and grandma. His mom, Toni and uncle, Fred got him into playing fast pitch softball. He continued playing as a catcher for 19 years. He loved going to powwows. He especially loved the 49’s. David was very helpful to those who needed help especially if they were in trouble. He was never one to back down. He became involved with AIM and was proud of his involvement. David got to be part of leaders of America. He loved to play tackle football with his brother and cousins in the street. David was an athlete and excelled in every sport that he tried out for. On one of his trips down South, he got into a motorcycle accident and he lost his eye sight in his left eye.
David got his GED first, then proceeded to get his Highschool diploma. In David’s younger years, he started having kids. His first born was a son whom he never got to know. His next was a daughter, named Cheyenne Autumn Hawk, born July 31, 1976, whom he met once or twice while she was young. Another daughter, Mewissa Rivas Beale was born on August 22, 1981 to Susie Rivas Beale. Later, his third daughter came after he married Linda Walker, Davetta Jo Hawk born on April 30, 1982. Later Dave and Linda divorced. He then met Debra Gilmore and they had a daughter together; Deann Jeanette Hawk was born on October 25, 1985. Later their relationship ended. David was in Oklahoma with his mom and grandma for Memorial Day weekend in 1991, they told him they were heading to Montana to visit her twin, Fred. While Fred was keeping David occupied and away from his house, his mother and grandma were going to leave. They came back in the early morning and caught them leaving and David said “I’ll be ready in a bit” and she said “no, you’re staying in Montana with your uncle”. So, he had to accept staying. After getting picked up by his current wife, (ha-ha) and dating, he was constantly teased for his accent, which he took in good humor, from his wife and sister-in-law, Rynette. He was a bouncer for the VFW, was a bingo caller and security guard at the Silver Wolf Casino. He started going to the Fort Peck Community College in the fall of 1991. On April 4, 1992, David Joe Hawk, Jr. was born. In May of 1993, he graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Building Trades. In 1994 he had an incident happen to him where he had lost his ability to speak. It took him over a year to regain his speech. On January 16, 1996, John Henry Hawk was born. On November 21, 1999, Leslie Martin Hawk was born. David was a carpenter, he knew construction, cement, ironwork, roofing, siding, electrical and plumbing. He would say he knew how to build a house from the ground up. He got certified in Lead Abatement, Asbestos, removal, and Hazardous material. He worked for Fort Peck Housing, he also worked for the Fort Peck College. He worked at the Sidney Sugar Beeters, and at Alco, unloading trucks. He worked all over the Rez. He also worked in Culbertson, Opheim, Nashua, Fort Peck, and Sheridan, Wyoming. David worked for so many companies and many bosses, too many for me to remember. David helped many people out of dire situations, such as towing people, and giving jumps, no matter what season it was. He was always dressed for the weather. He wood-burned pictures and gave them to family members. He had many dogs whom he built dog houses for. He built his own benches, stands, stools, bed frames, picnic benches, and his own shelves. He loved to go for cruises with his dogs. He liked to wake up early, drink his coffee, he would go outside and watch the sunrise, do his crossword puzzles and listen to the radio. He loved to sew, and play cards and dice. He liked to play triple Yahtzee, listen to oldies and country. He liked to watch old movies over and over. He liked to play pool, throw darts and throw horseshoes. He liked to workout so he wouldn’t get hurt on the job. He visited friends in the local bars and at their houses. He loved to tell stories. He loved to barbeque, no matter the weather. He also loved to make enchiladas and his potato salad. If anyone came to visit him, he always made sure they were fed. He really loved to play catch with his sons. He loved to stop by his sons to pick his grandson Wyatt, “His little spinner,” up and bring him to the house and give him candy, chocolates, chips and licorice.
David was preceded in death by his sisters, Antoinette L. “Doll-Doll” Hawk, Kelly J. Azure, Donna Martell; brothers, John Henry “Hank” Hawk, Emerson Melbourne; his mother, Frances “Toni” AllRunner; his niece, Sandra Fast Horse Darnell; his cousin, Gilbert Sanchez; his uncle, David “Muggid” Fanman, Jr., and nephew David “Beano” Fanman, III; and his cousin Joshua Jackson.

A big thank you to all the doctors, nurses, aides, specialists, case managers, ambulance crews, and to Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel. David knew that you all were there to provide him with the best of care and good intentions for him and his family.

My deepest condolences to the family of David Hawk.We both attended Gidley Jr. High.I remember David as being an excellent quarterback who could throw very well. I was not a popular kid at Gidley having come from the rival gradeschool to Rio Vista and felt animosity from a lot of kids there. I remember one day having a casual conversation with David in the school hallway after hours and he was actually friendly to me, a really cool guy. He had everyone’s respect. What a privilege to have known him. Also remember his big brother Hank.He was at most fights there checking it out. He did say he was Cheyenne. Sorry for your loss.
