Elizabeth Mae Comeslast Shawl, age 68, has made her journey to Heaven with Lord holding her hand, on December 24, 2021. She passed peacefully in her home in Omak, Washington, with her mate, 2 daughters, 2 grandsons, and her great niece by her side.
Elizabeth (Tiny) was born to Albert and Margaret Comeslast on July 19, 1953, weighing in at 2 pounds, on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Tiny was the youngest of 10 or 12 siblings. She is the last of her siblings to leave this world.
Tiny grew up in Wolf Point, where she attended the public schools. During her childhood, she gained so many friends, which grew into best friends or like sisters. To name a few, Dorris Miller, Elaine Lilley, Terry Lilley, Wilma Pretty Shield, and Bessie Beauchamp. Mom moved to Wahpeton, North Dakota, to attend a boarding school, Wahpeton Indian School for many years. It was in 1969 she stopped to start her family. Tiny had 6 children; Joseph K. Shawl (deceased), Yvonne Comeslast, of Omak, Washington, Rhea RedDog (deceased), Clydene M. Comeslast (deceased), Kareen J. Shawl, of Omak, Washington, and William M. Shawl, of Spokane, Washington. Tiny moved to Washington in 1987 and made a home for herself and her children in Omak, Washington. She met her mate around 1989, David Johns, of Omak, Washington.
Tiny was her mother’s daughter. She wore an apron daily and helped raise some of her grandchildren and ones with no family. Mom’s house was never quiet or empty, it was full of laughter and love.
Tiny had worked in the apple sheds and studied for her CNA. She worked at the Okanogan Valley Cave Center but her passion was to be at home and take care of her daddy (Albert), children, and grandchildren through the years. Even as she fell ill, she was still caring for her grandkids.
Mom/grandma enjoyed sitting the river and visiting family. Every summer, she attended the Omak Suicide Races and Pow-wow. You would see her in a shawl dancing during intertribal. She would go for drives just to see the beautiful mountains. Mom loved our family gatherings, where you could see that gleam of love in her eyes. I can’t explain or express how much mom loved us all, but her smile said it all.
Before mom passed she had one wish: to return to Wolf Point and see her family and her friends; and to have dinner with them all. Dave fulfilled that wish. Thank you Dave for always being there for our beloved mother, aunty, grandma, and friend.
Elizabeth is survived by her children, Yvonne Comeslast, of Omak, Washington, Kareen J. Shawl, of Omak, Washington, and William M. Shawl, of Spokane, Washington; grandchildren, Amanda Comeslast, Jose A. Muniz, Christina Duarte, Tristan Duarte, Miguelina Ramos, Ezeikal R. Comeslast, all of Omak, Washington, Moriah Harry, Adrian Harry, Kennieth Harry, Rhea Harry, Issiah Harry, Jace Shawl, Jauquine Shawl, Martina Comeslast, Travis Cruz, Kelly R. Wolverine-Jensen, Kato Wolverine-Jensen, Josiah Wolverine-Jensen, and a granddaughter in Olympia, Washington; nieces, Wilma Pretty Shield, Bessie Beauchamp, Elize Comeslast, Emily Comeslast, and Marianne Comeslast; nephews, Danny Gonzalez, and Pat Bercier. Mom raised Martina Comeslast, Travis Cruz, Rebbecca Comeslast, Miguel Morales, Dorian Comeslast, Sr., Jace and Jauquine Shawl as her own children.
Forgive me if I did not mention you because there are many to name, I tried.
Tiny is preceded in death by her parents, Albert Comeslast-Twin, and Margaret Comeslast-Twin; siblings, Alfred Comeslast, Charles (Chucky) Comeslast, Floyd Comeslast (Chubby), Bucky Comeslast, Vera Standsfast, Rosemarie Comeslast, and Belva Comeslast. (Sorry, there are more, but I don’t know). Children, Joseph K. Shawl, Rhea RedDog, Clydene Comeslast; plus numerous aunties, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.
