Joan Elaine Peters, 59, of Wolf Point, MT, was surrounded by her family as she passed away on April 5th, 2023, following complications from a heart attack.
Joan was born on February 24, 1964, to William “Bill” and Ina Claire Squires in Wolf Point, MT. During high school, Joan was class president and enjoyed participating in the National Honor Society, Pep Club, cheerleading, and playing her flute in the Wolf Point High School Symphonic Band.
After Joan graduated as Valedictorian from Wolf Point High School in 1982, she went on to Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and then Montana State University – Northern in Havre, Montana.
After graduating with an associate degree, she started working with her mother and father at Squires Insurance as an insurance agent, and eventually took ownership of the business in 1988 when her father retired.
In 1979, Joan met Steven Peters at a Wolf Point High School dance. Joan and Steven were married in 1984 and went on to have two daughters, Savannah and Jocelyn. Together they enjoyed traveling to rodeos and the adventures that came with living on the farm, including raising goats, sheep, llamas, donkeys, pigs, chickens, cats, rabbits, geese, or any other animal her daughters asked for.
Many would describe Joan as a sassy redhead with a quick wit, infectious laugh, and great sense of humor. She was strong-willed and stubborn. Joan enjoyed going on walks and to the river with her dogs, traveling to see her daughters, gambling in Las Vegas, golfing, going to Stampede, visiting with those who did business at Squires Insurance, and attending any event with a parade. She was very proud of her Wolf Point community and enjoyed serving for several years on the City Council and for the Faith Home Foundation since 2016. Her faith was very important to her, and she was actively involved in multiple ways at the Immaculate Conception Church.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Ina Claire Squires, her grandparents, Stella and Olaf Malde, Glen and Margaret Squires, her mother-in-law, Phyllis Peters, and her beloved dogs Blue, Babe, Jack, Victor and Thomas. She will be missed greatly by her husband, Steven Peters, her daughters and sons-in-law, Savannah and Jesse Geske and Jocelyn and Marcus Moran, her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Dave Squires-Hood, her sister-in-law, Brenda Sol Peters, her father-in-law, Richard Peters, her nephew and niece-in-law, Jason and Kadee Doornek, her great nephews and niece, Tieler, Trae, Taren, Shaylin and Aaden, and her chocolate lab, Luke.

To Joan’s family,
I met your mother when she was first took over her dad’s business. She has such beautiful red locks of hair, I told her she reminded me of Margaret on Dennis the Menace, we had a good laugh and she became Margaret to me after that. I was shocked when I read she passed away. Such a joyful spirit and am sure she will be missed, but when Jesus calls a loved one to come home, we must let them go home, but you want to say “no, not her” I feel your pains, I am still dealing with my 2 sisters being called home to Jesus, so soon, so little time. May the Holy Spirit comfort each and everyone who is in sorrow, death seems to be everywhere lately, hold on to Jesus, He’s there, even though it may seem like it.

My condolences to the family, and to everyone who knew this beautiful soul. I grew up, going to elementary and part of my junior high year, with Joan, as one of my very good friends. May she always be remembered, for the kind and gentle person, she was. I will miss her, very much. May God bring everyone, comfort, during this difficult time.
Darcia Larsen says
My condolences to Joan’s family and friends. I worked at the FSA Office in Culbertson and came to know Joan only through our telephone conversation during certification or acreage reporting time. She was such a joy to visit with and very perfessional with her business. We were always going to meet and have coffee so that we could meet face to face instead of over the phone. Sorry to say that never happened. I will treasure her friendship we shared through agriculture and laughs at seeing the lighter side of things. Rest in peace Joan. I will miss your witt and sense of humor. God’s blessing.

I believe I met Joan in kindergarten. We were neighbors of a sort. Her home was a block behind the alley where I lived. I remember chasing each other when we dropped off May Day Baskets and ran for our lives so not to be kissed by the chaser. Joan remembered this and how she played “ditch” and “kick the can” on our block. So, growing up with Joan and as a lot of fun. In High School we served our n student council together and she was a cheerleader for our teams. I admired her intelligence and mix of wit and humor. It’s extremely hard to comprehend not seeing her when or if I ever get back to Wolf Point. She was the first classmate I remember introducing my wife to the first time I came home after moving to Alaska. My prayers are with Steven and her daughters whom someday I would love to meet. I know for those of us from the class of ‘82 there will always be a huge void without her.
