In the early morning of May 15, 2021, Joseph was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at his home in Poplar, Montana.
Joe was born on August 10, 1981, in Poplar, to Sylvia (Annie) Cantrell and Anthony (Tony) WiseSpirit. Joe attended school and lived in Poplar his whole life with his older brother Jason by his side, no matter what they were doing, good or bad. He loved to play basketball, hang out with friends and family, just shooting the breeze, he would give you the shirt off his back while always maintaining his million dollar smile and cracking jokes. His humor is one of his best traits. He was always helping others even if it meant he would go without. He always had a listening ear and a shoulder for you to cry on.
In 2004-2009, Joe sang with the drum group “Red Roc,” which he gave it’s name. The group meant a lot to him. He enjoyed every minute and loved every song sang. In January 2006 he sang with is family/brothers, “WiseSpirit Singers”, he took a lot of pride in that. In his early years, Joe worked at Tande’s, while raising his boys; Shawn, born in the summer of 2003 and Jaymin, born May of 2007. Joe also worked various other jobs, he was a jack of all trades, he did it all. The past 10 years, he worked in construction as a carpenter for RY Construction and BC construction, he loved to build things.
In 2011, he met his special love, Sophie, and in 2013, they had their first baby, his princess, Natalynn. Then in 2014, a boy, Nathan, in 2016, another boy, Clarance. He also had very special stepson Nadden there to complete the family. Joe loved his children more than anything in the world. They were his pride and joy! He would say he was shooting for a basketball team, that’s how much he loved kids, he always wanted lots of them. He always had his nephews and nieces over at his house playing and visiting. Joe loved his family very much. Especially his children, Shawn, Jaymin, Natalynn, Nathen, Clarance and Nadden.
He is survived by his long time companion, Sophie Spotted Wolf; children, Shawn Allen, Jaymin Dean, Natalynn Rose, Nathan Roderick, Clarance Owen, and stepson, Nadden Raynes; mother, Sylvia (Annie) Cantrell; father, Anthony (Tony) WiseSpirit; brothers, Jason (Mable) WiseSpirit, Benji WiseSpirit, and Joshua WhiteBull; sisters, Yolanda (David) Bleazard, Season and Morning WiseSpirit, Autumn WhiteBull, Tashina Cantrell, Crystal Stormy, Antionette WiseSpirit and adopted sister, Red Fawn; special nieces and nephews, Marcus, Chakara, Brayden, Aiyanna, Leighton, and Morgan (Bro); and many nieces and nephews too numerous to name, but he loved you all; aunts and uncles, Ida (Artie) Youngman, Cheryl Shields, Mary WolfChild, Beth (Jake) Whitebull of Poplar, Madonna Azure of White Shield, ND, Mary Lou Azure of Poplar; special aunt, Nancy Steele of Brockton; and grandparents, Tony Boxer and Arden Boxer of Poplar; uncles, Leonard Cantrell, Arthur Cantrell, Newton Cantrell, Rusty Boxer, Virgil Cantrell, and many relatives too numerous to mention, forgive us if we forgot anyone it is unintended.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Genevive Boxer and Owen WiseSpirit; and maternal grandparents, Otto Cantrell and Nida Kennedy. We love you with all our heart, forever and ever.
A wake will be held 7 p.m. Saturday, May 22 at the Poplar Cultural Center. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, May 23 at the Poplar Cultural Center. Interment will follow at the Poplar City Cemetery. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements and condolences for the family can be left by using the form below.

My sincere condolescences to the family and children of Joe Wise Spirit. My prayers for comfort and healing during the loss of your son, husband, father, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson. Joe was a great father, I would see him outside of his house making sure his children were taken care of. Joe was always cleaning his front yard where the children played. He was a proud dad when his children would dance at pow-wows, getting them ready, and dancing with them. Joe will be missed by all who knew him.
