Vermae Evelyn (Johnson) Gobert-Taylor, Age 83, Soldier Woman (Akiticawin), our beloved mother, sister, auntie, grandmother was called home on March 15, 2024 at the Billings Clinic with her loved ones at her side. Vermae was born on January 22, 1941 in Poplar, Montana, the daughter of John Two Bulls and Cynthia Lydia Johnson. She was raised by her maternal grandparents David B. Johnson and Eliza (No Breast) Johnson in Chelsea. Vermae’s paternal grandparents were Charles Two Bulls and Mary (Feather Earring) Two Bulls. She was a proud descendant of her Great Grandfather Bad Temper Bear (Mato Tawachinsica).
She grew up in Poplar and graduated from Poplar High School. She went on to complete Beautician School (1966) in Oakland, California and Licensed Practical Nurse (1977) at Northern Montana College in Havre, Montana. In 1968, she married William John Gobert and they were together until his passing in 1976. She remarried in 1987 to William Neil Taylor and they were together until his passing in 2003. Vermae had two children, Shelley Gobert and Marcus Johnson who preceded her in death.
Vermae enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and friends. Vermae was a former Tribal Executive Board Council Woman, Wildland Firefighter, LPN, Certified Beautician, Truck Driver, Business owner, Seamstress, and made regalia with the most beautiful beadwork. She enjoyed reading, watching TV, dancing at pow wows, playing machines, bingo, and visiting with friends and family. Vermae was also into genealogy and was always wanting to know where she came from. She loved the powwow trail where she met and made many friends. Later on in life she devoted her time to advocating for community members, indigenous issues on a state and federal level by participating in community water protection and safety issues meetings/events; including education equity meetings/events, and MMIW meetings/events. Vermae was a strong and compassionate woman, a mentor to many, and always available to lend a helping hand when needed.
