George Frank Winhofer, age 71, of Richey, MT passed away at the Glendive Medical Center on Saturday, October 27, 2012.
George was born August 17, 1941 in Poplar, MT to Frank and Dorthy (Voorhees) Winhofer. He attended school in NW Richland County, later attending and graduating from Poplar High School in 1959. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Airforce and was honorably discharged after 4 years of service. He returned to the family farm and continued farming with his father. On December 6, 1972 he was united in marriage with Margaret (Lee) Eggert and acquired quite a challenge with her 4 children. (We love you George) George had two sons, Daryn and Kirk, with Margaret. They were his pride and joy. He also had 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He loved playing with the little ones; from holding the tiniest toddler on one hand in the air to having each and every one of them trained at what pocket to get the dollar bill out of. Throughout the 1980’s George loved racing stock cars on all the local dirt tracks, including Canada. His driving skills acquired him many trophies. He enjoyed following NASCAR racing. Collecting guns and attending gun show was one of his favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed raising and butchering his own hogs. He continued farming with his son, Kirk until the time of his death.
George was preceded in death by his parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; sister, Delores; and step son, Jeff.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Richey; children, Daryn (Onya) Winhofer of Richey, Olivia Winhofer of Richey, Kirk Winhofer of Richey; step-daughter, Debbie (Keith) Carda and their children, Jeff, Megan and Blaine of Dundee, OR; step-sons, Alex (Betty-Lou) Eggert and their children, Tiffani (John) Clark, Ashley (JR) Bagwell and Austin Eggert all of Glendive, Tony (Nancy) Eggert and their children, Shawna and Ryan all of Richey, Josh Baker of Grand Forks, ND, and Darcie (Scott) Tangen of Fargo, ND; brother in law, Sherman Hines of Williston, ND, and his children, Dennis Hines and family of Washington, Sherri (David) McCrory and family of Plentywood, and Dwayne Hines and his family of Williston, ND; and many more relatives.

We are so sadden by this loss. We will forever be grateful to George for giving Tanner his first tractor driving lesson when Tanner’s beloved Grandpa was too ill to do so. The look on Tanner’s face the first time George called him a girl was priceless! He soon learned that was just “George being George”.

Margaret and family,
I was very sorry to hear about George. I have a lot of fond memories of the Winhofer family from years ago. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Jim & Rene'Voorhees says
Georgie was my older cousin who had a great sense of humor. When we went to visit them at the Winhofer farm his upstairs bedroom was filled with toys, games, magazines and cool stuff. I could hardly wait to go upstairs and snoop around. He was a hard working farmer but was always available to help family if needed. I will remember Gerogie with fond memories.

Read this from another funeral being held today and it seems fitting to pass along to the Winhofers….

Patti (Winhofer) and Joe Metz says
OH George we will truely mss you. I remember all the visits to the farm and being allowed into your room upstairs only to be in awe of all the airplanes hanging from your ceiling, what a hero~you were in the Air Force. As I got older you always had time for me and showed me (the city girl) neat stuff at the farm. As a man you still had time for everyone and could fix anything. My thoughts are with your family at this time as everyone celebrates your wounderful life. I have many great memories of you.
Denise (Senner) Dean says

May the memories you have forever keep George close in hearts.
