In loving memory of Harry Three Stars Sr., (Hehaka Gi) Brown Elk. He was called home by the Creator on November 27, 2014 surrounded by his family. Harry was born on February 9, 1934 in Pine Ridge, SD, to Sarah (Red Horse) and Paul Three Stars. Harry lived in Pine Ridge until graduating High School in 1954. Upon graduation Harry joined the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict from October 1954 until 1956 when he was honorably discharged; he then continued to serve in the Reserves for six years.
Harry moved to Poplar in 1962 where he met Hazel Lester, they were married in 1964 until August 2006 when she was called home by the Creator. From this union they had two children, Harry Three Stars Jr. and Sarah Three Stars. Harry also has a daughter, Linda Three Stars of Kyle, SD. He also raised three stepchildren, Roy Azure of White Shield, ND, Kathleen and Marylou Azure of Poplar.
Harry was a hard worker throughout his life and held many different jobs; in his early years he worked as a farm hand, a construction worker with C&M Construction, a Security Guard with the A&S Gun Factory, a laborer with the BIA Irrigation Department and a heavy equipment mechanic with the BIA Roads Department. He then worked as a Security Guard for A&S Industries and later for the Poplar School District as a Security Guard upon retiring. In addition to the positions he held, Harry enjoyed helping family, friends and members of the community with mechanic work at his home garage.
Harry was a humble, respectful man who always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. He was viewed as a positive role model to his family, friends, the community and the people that knew him. He always had time for his grandchildren and attended many school functions in support of them. He also enjoyed digging turnips, picking berries and making dried corn and dried meat. He shared the fruits of his labor generously with family and friends.
He began his dancing early in the 80’s and traveled to the many Pow-Wows in Canada and the United States. He was asked by the Badland Singers to travel with them when they were asked to sing at festivals and cultural events. So he was able to dance in Washington DC mall and capital, Lowell, Mass, Carnegie Hall in New York City and far off Moscow, Russia.
Harry was a well known Traditional dancer and enjoyed the many friends he made in the powwow world. He enjoyed sharing and teaching his grandchildren this way of life. Harry held different positions within several powwow committees. Over the years he adopted many people; children as grandpa, others as niece, nephew, sister and brother.
He was preceded in death by His mother, father, brothers Alonzo (Puggy), Pete, Hazel (wife), Roy IV (grandson).
He is survived by his sister Louise Smith, son Harry Jr., daughter Sarah both of Poplar, Linda Marie, step children Kathleen, Roy, Mary Lou. Special nieces Paula and Lenore Three Stars of Washington. Numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I am sorry to read of the loss of your loved one. A verse that has often brought me comfort is at Rev. 21:4 “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” I hope this promise is of some comfort to you as well. My condolences.

Our sincere condolences to the family of Harry Three Stars….he is remembered very fondly as one who seemed to never quite smiling…..had a great sense of humor, very quick to laugh. I had worked with Harry at C&M Construction early 70’s………he truly was a jack of trades….he may be seen pounding nails in shingles on the roof one week , then you may see him doing siding, he did rough in work as well as finish work……even painting. He always was great worker with every one. We also have friendship with Louise, and Mrs. Sarah Three Stars was a regular church attendant with Mrs. Eva Eagle Bear at the Assembly of God Church, Poplar.

When I used to dance at the powwows and winter dances, Harry & Hazel always encouraged me and would laugh and tease. Anytime I hear the drum, I will remember them. As long as we remember, they will live forever in our hearts & mind until we all meet once again in that great camp beyond the sunset.

I am writing this for my father who was a best friend of Harry’s. He came to visit my dad last year in Pine Ridge. He knew my dad (Narcis) for many years and they were close even though they lived far apart he always found time to stop by when he was in Pine Ridge. We all knew him as Grandpa Harry. My dad was shocked to read that Harry passed away. He didn’t even know. We would like to send our condolences to all of the family and to tell you we loved grandpa Harry so much. We say wopila for sharing him with us here in Pine Ridge. What a beautiful spirit he was. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
