Kenny Ray Comes Last “Congo”, age 58, of Wolf Point, MT went to be with the Creator on Thursday, January 10, 2013 peacefully at his home.
He was born on March 10, 1954 to Gladys Nancy Comes Last and Archie Cantrell. He enjoyed fishing with his granddaughters, Val Rae, and Jafonda. He also loved to go to pow-wows and dance. He lived and followed our traditional ways, as he was a very spiritual man. Kenny was very active in boxing. His coach was Roy Harris, who helped him win many trophies. He also started kick boxing later in life. He enjoyed doing art work with his nephew, Joe-Joe Shawl.
He made his home on March 10, 2002 with Valerie Big Leggins where they raised their grandchildren, Sunset, Cherish, Justice, Val Rae, Jafonda, and Macey; step daughters, Donna, Dallas, Skyla, Tosha, Miranda, and Alexis; and stepson, Robert Birthmark. Ken and Val both enjoyed playing the machines, going out to eat, and just being with each other. He did love her dearly.
Kenny made his own dancing outfits as well as the grandchildren’s. He was very honored to be the head man dancer at the Wadopana pow-wow in 2010; he was called back in 2012 but due to ill health he couldn’t make it. He attended school at Southside in Wolf Point and graduated from Wahpeton, ND; where his sisters, Winnie and Wilma were very active in the Indian club. He grew up very close to his cousins, Danny Boy, Big Eyes, and Pat Comes Last.
He is survived by his sisters, Winnifred (Darwin) Schafer of Wolf Point, and Gloria Garfield of Denver, CO; brothers, Bill Slayter of MN, Ernest Comes Last, Jr., Randy Lambert, and Rocky Garfield all of Denver; sons, Travis, Duane, and Kenny, Jr. all of Spokane, WA, Mitchell Comes Last of Banville, IN and Menawa Comes Last of WA.
Ken is preceded in death by his sister, Vera Jean Comes Last (Lilley); brother, Wayne Cantrell; grandparents, Margaret and Albert Comes Last; step daughter, Starla White Hawk (Hutch); and his parents.
He will be dearly missed by family, nieces, nephews, and friends for he touched many people’s lives by his presence. He had many jokes and always had a smile. He will forever live in the hearts he had left behind.
A wake will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 17 at the Community Hall in Wolf Point. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 18 at the Community Hall in Wolf Point. Interment will follow at the King Memorial Cemetery in Wolf Point.
