Lauren was my foster sister from the time I was 5 years old. I haven’t seen her in over 35 years, but few people in my life have influenced me more, or had such an impact. I was her very small cowboy sidekick, and she was my Indian Lone Ranger hero. Here’s a list of things I learned from her:
1). How to ride a bike (no training wheels allowed…let gravity be your guide…bleeding legs, arms, lips, etc. do not warrant crying…simply wasn’t allowed).
2). Rodeo style steer roping (of course I was the steer and she would rope me as I ran across the lawn…I never really did get to rope anything…but I get the gist).
3). As a result of #2, I ended up being one of the fastest running kids in any school I ever attended (fear lends wings to the feet).
4). Basketball, football, wrestling, golf and tennis (though when playing any of these sports with Lauren, one might think it was only ever wrestling…the distinctions were very subtle…but I could always tell the difference).
5). Self Defense and how to stand up to bullies (again this tended to be more theoretical on my part as she gladly kicked the stuffing out of anyone who picked on me…I still sort of feel bad for all of the Muzzy brothers…some of them have also passed on so I hope they’re all getting along now in Heaven…hee hee…good luck with that).
6). A variation of, ‘The Old Gray Mare,’ that got me detention, sentences (100), and soap in my mouth, after only one performance for show and tell…in the second grade (I’m very sorry Mrs. Guin, I seriously had no idea what most of those words meant).
7). Unwavering loyalty, trust, and mutual respect…no matter how different we might be.
Rest In Peace Lauren Reddog! I love you forever.
