On the evening of December 3, 2013, Peter “Bull” Leonard Stump, Jr., of Oswego, MT left this world to be with the Lord and be reunited with loved ones in Heaven. Pete passed away peacefully of natural causes North of Poplar, MT while spending time with a special friend, Darlyn Grainger. He was 67 years old.
Pete was born in Havre, MT on December 31, 1945. He was the second son of eight children of Eleanor Marie Hubbard and Peter Walter Stump.
Pete joined the Army on December 15, 1965 and served in Germany, Europe, and Greece. He spent a total of 6 years in the service, being honorably discharged on February 2, 1968. Pete met and married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Jackson. They raised two sons together, Mike and Steve. They also raised 3 grandkids, Donell, Pete, and Kristin. Pete finished his education by receiving his G.E.D. and taking several college courses.
Pete had many jobs over the years; he was a custodian, police officer, game warden, and a soil conservation technician. He received an award from the City of Billings, MT for coming to the aid of a Billings City police officer that was being assaulted by a criminal. That was the kind of man he was; he had no fear, no quit, and didn’t back down from any challenge.
Pete was a cowboy! He loved to rope and ride. He was a member of the PRCA for many years. He qualified for the Montana circuit finals 3 times. Pete was also a member of several local roping clubs. He was always game to load up the horses and head down the road, no matter how far he had to go roping.
Pete has won 10 saddles and trophy buckles and other prizes, so many that we lost count. Even he couldn’t remember the exact number. “Chuck n Duck…there’s no money at the other end of the arena!” was a phrase he said often.
Pete was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Patty; brother, Harold; parents, Peter and Eleanor; granddaughter, Stephanie; and great grandchild, Pete, III.
Pete is survived by his sons, Mike (Pearl) of Oswego, MT and Steve (Connie) of Williston; brothers, Robert (Louise) and Ronnie (Gina) both of Rocky Boy, MT, Gordon (Bobbie) of Salt Lake City, UT, and Keith “Keno” of Great Falls, MT; sisters, Darleen (Pudd) and Edwina of Poplar; best friends, Ken (Karen) Blatt, Billy (Fredarica) Crow Bait Lamere all of Rocky Boy, MT; and many nephews, nieces, and grandchildren too numerous to mention but never forgotten.
A wake will be held 7 p.m. Friday, December 6 at the Oswego Community Hall. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 7 at the Oswego Community Hall. Interment will follow at the Oswego Presbyterian Cemetery.
Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel of Wolf Point has been entrusted with the arrangements. Condolences can be sent to the family using the form below.

I will always remember watching Pete and Mike Forest rope at the Wolf Point arena years ago. Pete could throw a heading rope faster and further than everyone at that time. They were” the team to beat”. He is going to be missed at the Hi Line ropings. I was just visiting with Ray Reede last weekend when I was back about how well Pete was roping this past summer. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I will always miss you and I just got to chatting with you after finding you all these years. I was hoping to see you again and now you are gone my cousin/brother. I loved you so much. You never got mad at me for hanging on you when I was a tiny girl. Always you had patience for me and my dad Jim was one of your favorite uncles. The song the Cowboy Rides Away is so you!! Love and miss you already. Never got to see you. I am crying right now for you but you will see my uncle Pete and my dad Jim and all your relatives once again and most of all your beloved wife. I am glad I had just a moment to be there. I really loved you and it shocked me tonight to see this. ♥ :'(

10 years today grandpa. My heart hurts. It’s still broken and probably won’t ever be full until I can see you again. I hate December. I hate everything. I miss you more than anyone knows or can imagine. No one even asks me about you anymore.. no one asks if I’m ok… no one remembers why I’m so upset in these winter months. I miss you and all of our rodeo times. ❤️ I think I’ll miss you forever Gramps. 🥹❤️
